Orcas interaction with the environment
There is a very popular question about the controversy between keeping whales in captivity or not. That is "Are these whales better off in the environment or by being protected by humans in these tanks?" What most people don't know is that when the whales are in captivity, there life spans are cut in half. An average killer whale travels about one hundred miles in one day. While they are in a tank, they can't travel one mile. Killer whales are also used to having the entire ocean over their heads for water pressure. When they are put into a tank, the water pressure is too low to support their fins. This forces the whales fin to collapse, just like all of the whales people see performing shows at Sea World.
Many people are concerned with whether a killer whale is better off living in a tank or in the open ocean because of the food source. Killer whales are possibly the smartest hunters in all of the ocean. They hunt different animals in different styles. They learn from their mistakes and they learn from accidents. As the clip above shows, killer whales have learned to flip great white sharks onto their backs to make them completely immobile. They have also learned how to knock off a seal off a piece of ice by creating waves that rock the ice back and forth to have the seal slip off. The killer whale is very able to thrive in the environment on its own, it is one of the best hunters the sea has ever seen.

This is an image of a killer whale that is held in captivity with a collapsed dorsal fin. This is caused by too low of water pressure; the killer whales is used to having the entire ocean over its head. This can affect the way the whale swims, affecting its direction and speed that a killer whale can usually do.
